BACL Rapidplay Cancelled (Sorry)

Those of you who read the BACL Handbook closely will have noticed that the BACL Rapidplay had been scheduled for Sunday 7 January 2018. Unfortunately this date clashed with county fixtures.

Despite best efforts we've been unable to find another date which both fitted around other chess events and could be accommodated at the venue.

As such, the 2017-18 BACL Rapidplay has been cancelled. We'll try again next season.

All BACL players are welcome to come along to the Bury St Edmunds venue on Thursday 4th January at 7:30pm to join in a 5 round, 15-min Rapidplay tournament. This will not be a graded event. We ask just £1 attendance fee. Any takings over £20 will be returned in prize money.

It would be helpful to have some idea if you plan to come. Please drop me an email: steve [at]

Website Update

Welcome to the 2017-18 Season. Over the summer I've introduced a few changes to the website, each of which affects captains:

Password Reset

To improve security, I've upgraded the encryption we use when storing your passwords. Unfortunately, that means captains will need to request a password reset. You can do that by following the "Forgotten Password" link which you'll see when you go to log in.

You should be sent an email with a new password which you can change to something more memorable after logging in. Some emails addresses don't seem to like the emails the system sends, so if you don't receive that within 10 minutes or so, then do get in touch with me.

Adding Players

Once you're logged in, you'll see a new option to add a player to your club list. To do this, you first search for the player in the list of players already known to the league and to the ECF. If they are found, you can select them from the list and add them to your club. If not, you can supply an estimated grade and add them to your club.

Please get in touch if you run into any issues with the website. If you get error messages, it would be particularly helpful if you could include them along with details of what you did in order to reach that error message.

BACL Annnual General Meeting - 19th July 2017

The date, time and venue for the AGM have been set:

Where: Moreton Hall Community Centre (the Bury venue, post code IP32 7EW)

The agenda and papers will be circulated to league officers and club secretaries via email. If you have items you would like to be discussed at the meeting, please note rule 1.2:

This includes any proposal to change the rules, which should specify the proposed wording, though amendements may be considered at the AGM. The Administrative Secretary will circulate agendas and papers at least seven days before the AGM.
That three week period means you have until 28 June to send your proposals to Stephen Pride. You can find Stephen's contact details in the BACL Handbook or on the website

Teams consist of 4 players from the EACU but not necessarily from the same club. EACU players are those living in, or from clubs located in or affiliated to, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Norfolk or Suffolk. Also eligible are people born in the county, those with 5 years residence in the county at any time, or currently attending a school, college or university in the county.

Aggregate grades will be based on the ECF's January grading list.

The Team 600 is for teams with an aggregate grade of 600 or less, though for this calculation anyone with a grade under 100 will be taken as 100.

The Team 500 is for teams with an aggregate grade of 500 or less, though for this calculation anyone with a grade under 75 will be taken as 75.

The Team 400 is for teams with an aggregate grade of 400 or less, though for this calculation anyone with a grade under 50 will be taken as 50.

There will be a cash prize for the team with most game points in each category but the number and value of prizes will depend on the number of entries.

The event uses the county match format of 2 rounds starting at 10:00am and 2:30pm. If digital clocks are available for all boards of a match, the standard time control will be 36 moves in 80 minutes, followed by 10 minutes to finish the game, with an increment of 15 seconds per move from move

The exact format of the competition will depend on the number of entries. The entry fee is £20 per team payable on the day. Any player who is not a member of the ECF needs to pay an extra £5. The clubs that won the top division of the six EACU county leagues (Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Bury League) in the last season are entitled to enter a team of entirely their club players at half price into the Open.

Tea and coffee will be provided free of charge.

Enquiries and entries should be made to the organiser, Patrick Ribbands (ribbs [at] or 01223 842197). Entries by 28th March if possible please though an early indication that you might raise a team would also be much appreciated. Later entries at the organiser's discretion.

If you do not have the four players for a team Patrick should be able to put you in touch with others who would like to play.
